The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM), 1 Wimpole Street appeared on prime time television on 7 December when MasterChef: The Professionals visited the venue during knockout week.
Judged by Monica Galetti and Michelin-starred chef Marcus Wareing, five of the ten remaining chefs in the competition battled it out in the kitchens at 1 Wimpole Street. For the first time they had to work together as a team to create and cook a three-course fine dining menu. With two and a half hours to complete the task their final menu was served to a panel consisting of the RSM’s President, Mr Babulal Sethia, plus five distinguished guests, including Director of 1 Wimpole Street, Nigel Collett.
Not only did the chefs have to design a spectacular menu, but they also had to offer stunning vegetarian options for the President himself.
The meal started with an amuse bouche, an interesting take on a cauliflower ice-cream, followed by a Gazpacho starter with pickled vegetable and basil oil which impressed the panel enormously.
The main course was lamb three ways; loin, sweetbread and breast, with the panel commenting on the quality of the lamb. The vegetarian option was a dish to make carnivores jealous; a combination of asparagus, miso and ginger – described as delicious by Mr Sethia.
After three courses the guests were served an outstanding ‘pre-pudding pudding’ of gooseberry and apple crème brûlée, followed by a Caribbean baked Alaska – an impressive dish to pull off given the time frame and pressure on the team.
Overall the meal was superb with the President and his guests commenting that if this had been a restaurant, they would most definitely come back again.
Now at the final stretch of the competition; only the most talented chefs will go on to the semi-finals and move one step closer to their dream of lifting the MasterChef: The Professionals trophy 2016.
